Keyboard layout issues

After an update to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS my keyboard seemed to be stuck on a US layout. None of the ideas and fixes in this post (http://askubuntu.com/questions/109635/wrong-keyboard-map) sorted it out. Removing ibus seemed a little extreme when I saw the other packages it was going to remove. Reinstallation of ibus did work though.
